Predictive Coach Pilot Program Evaluation

An independent 3rd party study by VTTI reveals significant and compelling fleet safety benefits provided by Predictive Coach. Proof positive that Predictive Coach reduces dangerous driver behavior.

Executive Summary

In an effort to provide fleets with another option to target risky driving, RMJ Technologies developed Predictive Coach. Predictive Coach automatically assigns behavior-based driver training based on the risky driving behaviors recorded by an onboard safety monitoring (OSM) device.

Project Objective

The goal of this project was to evaluate the ability of Predictive Coach’s innovative driver training delivery method to reduce risky driving behavior.

Project Method

One large municipality in the Southeast United States participated in this study. This municipality includes over 2,000 square miles and over 1 million residents. The Predictive Coach program was implemented with 92 drivers in one department within the municipality.

Analyses focused on two assessments. The first analysis goal was to compare the mean rates of the targeted risky driving behaviors prior to and after the targeted Predictive Coach intervention. The second analysis goal was to examine response generalization to Predictive Coach training.

Although driver awareness alone resulted in significant reductions in risky driving, it is unlikely this behavioral improvement would have continued without Predictive Coach. Research shows that interventions are unlikely to result in sustained behavioral changes without behavioral reinforcement. The Predictive Coach program offers behavioral reinforcement through targeted training. Further, the Predictive Coach program resulted in an additional 8% reduction in speeding events for those drivers who were eventually assigned a training.

Conclusions

Although driver awareness alone resulted in significant reductions in risky driving, it is unlikely this behavioral improvement would have continued without Predictive Coach. Research shows that interventions are unlikely to result in sustained behavioral changes without behavioral reinforcement. The Predictive Coach program offers behavioral reinforcement through targeted training. Further, the Predictive Coach program resulted in an additional 8% reduction in speeding events for those drivers who were eventually assigned a training.
During the baseline, the mean rate of overall exceptions was 3.39 per 100 Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT). During the Predictive Coach intervention, the mean rate of overall exceptions was 0.92 per 100 VMT. This represents a 72.88% reduction in overall exceptions.
Many fleets struggle with the challenges of managing telematics data, driver training and feet management. Telematics without management oversight present inherent liability via willful negligence. Predictive Coach helps combat willful negligence by reducing the workload fleet managers face day to day by automatically assigning behavior-based driver training. Predictive Coach leads the transportation industry with patent pending technology which saves lives by changing driving behavior and reducing fleet management workload.

Summary

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Predictive Coach in reducing risky driving across 92 drivers. This study showed that Predictive Coach resulted in statistically significant reductions in risky driving. Specifically, excessive speeding was reduced by 73.93% from baseline to intervention across all drivers. For those drivers who received training, Predictive Coach resulted in statistically significant reductions in speeding, hard braking, and hard cornering. Further, drivers that did not receive training also significantly reduced risky driving with Predictive Coach.
